🌲 Symbolism of the Pine Tree

  • The Pine Tree: A symbol of liberty, resilience, and nature, especially in New England. The Eastern White Pine was highly valued for ship masts and became a symbol of resistance to British exploitation of American resources.

  • Colonial Protest: The British had reserved large white pines for Royal Navy masts, marking them with a "broad arrow." Colonists resented this, and the pine tree became a subtle symbol of defiance.

🏴 The Phrase: “An Appeal to Heaven”

  • This comes from John Locke, the Enlightenment philosopher whose ideas greatly influenced the American Founders.

  • In his Second Treatise of Government, Locke wrote that when all legal and political means of resolving tyranny are exhausted, the people can make “an appeal to heaven”—meaning a moral or divine justification for revolution.

  • The flag declared that the colonists had no choice left but to appeal to a higher power for justice against British oppression.

🏛️ Historical Use

  • Commissioned by George Washington in 1775 for use by the newly created Massachusetts State Navy and other colonial naval forces.
